The third time the porthole thumped, you were already holding the ladle, because nothing good ever knocked at half past four in the North Atlantic. Through the salt-smeared glass a narwhal bobbed in the grey swell, spotted green and pink like a sweet tin left out in the rain, its tusk twisted like a barber's pole. It stared at you with one unimpressed eye and went on knocking with the end of that tusk, patient as a tax man.

"You're not having the porridge," you told it. It blew a fine spray across the glass, which you took as a counter-offer. The only sweet thing aboard was the tin of heart-shaped boiled sweets your sister had posted to the galley for Christmas, and you had been saving them for a day you could bear. You cracked the lid, shook three onto the sill and opened the hatch an inch. The narwhal rolled, scooped them neatly, and regarded you as if you had been slow to get the message.

Skipper Brannigan came down for his tea just as the creature was reaching for a fourth. He saw the open hatch, the cold air, and you standing there with a tin of sweets and a face like a boiled pudding. "Talking to the sea again, Cook?" he asked. You said the sea had started it.

In the morning the porthole was fogged on the outside, and someone had drawn a small heart in the condensation with a stubby finger, then four little stars beside it, one of them slightly lopsided. Beneath it, on the sill, lay a single pink sweet, bitten clean in half.
