Two feathers with dotted swirls
Mixed · Flash
The image shows two feathers drawn side by side, each filled with fine intricate patterns of dots, scallops, zigzags and small motifs. The left feather is shaded with soft blue, teal and pink watercolour, while the right feather is rendered in black ink and grey. Fine dotted trails curl around both feathers across a plain white background.

The archivist wanted the feathers back before the solstice bell, so I carried them down through the spokes in a tin lined with cotton, one hand on the rail the whole way. Nobody on Thessaly Ring had touched a real feather in four generations. We had the tin, the ledger, and a rumour that the ink on the grey one had been mixed from soot and tree gum by a painter called Ines Almquist, the last person to sign her name in our records as an artist.

The blue one was the hard one to look at. Someone had washed it in teal and then in a pink that faded toward the quill, the way the corridor lights turned amber at the end of a shift. Under the glass its barbs were drawn as fine as hair, and every few finger-widths a small zigzag or scallop had been worked in, as though the painter had been counting something. The grey one had no colour at all, only pattern: dots, cross-hatching, a row of tiny triangles like a fence along a field that no longer existed.
The dotted trails were what the archivist had never catalogued. I traced them with a loupe and found they did not wander. They left the feathers' tips and bent in pairs, twelve turns to the left, then a hook, then a long line down toward the hull seam marked on the old plans as Vault Three. Ines had not drawn idle swirls. She had drawn the route to the seed hold, in ink that looked like decoration to anyone who had not been told what to look for.
I pinned them back in their tray, blue above grey, and left the lid off so the lamp would reach the dots. The file needed only a shelf number, so that was all I wrote. Then I went down the spokes to find the seed keeper and ask her to bring a torch.
