Blue floral tattoo on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A cluster of blue flowers with rounded petals, leaves and curling stems runs down from the top of the shoulder onto the upper arm. The petals and leaves are shaded in several tones of blue with fine outlines, giving a delft-style, porcelain-like look. The image is a close shot of the back of a woman's shoulder, with a white lace top in the background.

Dear Joost,

The kiln went cold on Tuesday and the master has finally let me paint the peonies on the new service for the Haarlem order. He still stands behind my stool while I work, counting the strokes, but he said nothing when the third cluster came out right, so I think he is pleased. Each flower takes three washes of cobalt before the outline goes on, and the blue must be thinned with so much water that it looks like a breath on glass until the fire has finished with it.

Pieter says the Company ships bring the cobalt in as ballast, grey stones stacked beneath the spices, and that the best pigment comes from ports where nobody asks what the captains were carrying. I do not care where it comes from. I care that the blue holds, and that a stem curls the way my hand wants it to curl rather than the way the pattern book insists.

Last week I broke a dish of my own. It was a small study of leaves and a single bloom that I had painted in the evenings with leftover paint, and when I dropped it on the flagstones it split clean across the middle of the flower. I was ready to sweep it up, but the master picked up the larger piece, turned it to the window and said the crack looked like a stem that had decided where to go. I have kept the pieces in my apron pocket since. Tell Mother I am eating properly.

Your sister, Anneke
