Blue flower and swirls on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A five-petal flower is shaded in blue with lighter highlights, with a small looped centre. Fine black vine-like swirls extend outwards from the flower in both directions across the skin. The tattoo sits on a forearm against a tiled floor, with the design centred in a horizontal composition.

Brannoch's keep had lost its roof to a winter gale the year before, and Ida Lowther had stopped expecting anything from the south tower but jackdaws. She climbed the broken stair with a basket of mortar and a bent trowel, because the steward had promised a penny a stone for every block she reset before Michaelmas.

On the third landing a blue flower had pushed through the gap where the sill had crumbled. It had five petals, pale at the tips and deep as a bruise at the base, and its centre was a tight little loop, as if someone had tied it there. Around it the stems ran outward in curls, thin as hair, looping over the stone and dropping off the edge into nothing. Ida had pulled up plenty of weeds in her life. She had never seen one that looked like it had been drawn with a pen.
She did not pull it. She knelt and packed loose stone around its roots, and the next morning there were two more flowers on the ledge, then a dozen, spilling down the outer wall in the wind. The steward came up to count her stones and found her sitting in the rubble with her back against the masonry. "The lord wants the tower made sound," he said. "Not dressed for a feast."
Ida pointed up at the blue flowers. "Then he can tell the swallows to nest somewhere else." She left the last stone unset. Come Michaelmas the tower stood half-roofed and wholly blue, and nobody in Brannoch ever asked her to make it sound again.
