Yellow flowers and black vine on a lower leg

Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A black linework vine winds up the lower leg, with orange and yellow flowers that have green centres and small mint green buds and leaves. The black lines are bold and sweeping, and the flowers are filled with flat colour. The design is set against smooth skin and rises from just above the ankle bone.

Dear Tom,

The wall below the chandlery has finally given up its secret. When Mr Pascoe pulled the ivy off on Monday, there was a black vine underneath, drawn in ink right into the stone, coiling up from the cobbles as though someone had planted it there the year you left. Marigolds ran up it, orange as lamp oil, each with a green eye at its centre. Mother says the sea air has rotted the plaster into patterns, but I stood there with a bucket of lime wash and could not bring myself to paint over it.

I have been counting the buds since. There are eleven small mint-coloured ones tucked where the leaves fork, and I am certain at least two opened on Wednesday while I was not looking. Mrs Hale from the net loft swears the vine is older than the harbour wall, and that whoever drew it was waiting for a boat that never came back. I told her that was a fine story for the tourists. She laughed at me and bought two of the marigold seeds I had saved in an old tea tin.

The vine stops just short of the water, where the wall meets the slipway. I keep thinking it is reaching for something. Yesterday I climbed down at low tide and found a pale green glass float wedged in the last curl, with a sprig of dried lavender beside it. I have set it on the windowsill next to your last letter, where the morning light comes through both at once.

Come home when the weather turns. Bring the compass if you still have it. The vine needs a sailor to tell it which way to go.

Love, Ada
