Daisy flowers and swirls on the foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cascade of stylised daisies in blue, pink and cream, each with a yellow centre, descending diagonally across the top of the foot. Black swirling vines and thin stems connect the flowers, and soft blue shading sits behind some of the petals. The photo is taken straight on against a white textured background, with the toes visible at the top of the frame.

The wind off the common had got under the canvas again, and Nell was on her knees in the mud behind the waltzer with a pot of cream paint and a brush worn down to three hairs. The banner had to be up by six. Mrs Okonedo at the hook-a-duck stall had already rung twice to ask whether the sign was done, and Dad was still under the generator swearing at a fuse.

The banner had been her aunt's, painted the summer before she died, a trail of daisies climbing from the bottom corner to the top, each one a different colour: blue, pink, and a cream that had faded to the shade of weak tea. Black swirls ran between them as if someone had flicked ink and let it curl. Nell knew every bloom by heart. What she could never see from the ground was the little pink one tucked low where the vine ran out, the one her aunt always said was the bravest because it had the least room.

She climbed the ladder with the lantern hooked on her belt and held the canvas taut against the ride's flank. Under the light she found what she had been half looking for: a sixth petal, sketched in pencil and never inked, a faint outline someone had meant to fill. Nell dipped the brush, hesitated, then wiped it on her jeans and reached for the little pot of yellow instead, to paint the centre the way her aunt always had.

When the lights came on at six, the daisies caught them all the way up the rail, and the queue at the gate went quiet. Dad came round the side wiping his hands and looked up for a long time. "Still her," he said. Nell nodded and pulled the ladder in before the first ride started.
