Blue gem heart with chain on upper chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A faceted, heart-shaped blue gem sits in a textured silver frame, with a chain trailing from its top edge toward the collarbone. The shading gives the gem a glossy, three-dimensional look, with lighter highlights on the facets and a small white glint near the centre. The colour is mainly deep blue with grey and black in the chain and frame, against lightly lit skin and a blurred indoor background.

The stone came up in the silt of Lock Nine on the morning the Perseverance was due at Stourport. Hannah Cole fished it out with the boathook while her father was still cursing the paddle gear, and she held it up to the grey light the way you would hold a fish you were not sure was dead. It was blue as deep water and cut like a heart, set in a silver frame gone black at the edges, with a broken chain trailing from its top as if it had been torn from a neck.

Her father took one look and said the river never gave anything back for nothing. He wanted it sold in Worcester, where a jeweller on Broad Street had once bought a boatload of brass fittings and asked no questions. Hannah wrapped the stone in a rag, slid it into the pocket of her apron, and said nothing. All the way through the locks that afternoon she felt it knocking against her hip, slow as a second pulse.
At Diglis they tied up for the night. Hannah sat on the cabin roof with her knees drawn up and held the stone to the last of the sun. Inside the facets she could see the lock gates, the towpath and a heron standing on one leg, all bent and blue. Her father called up through the hatch to ask what she was doing. She did not know how to answer. She only knew that the stone seemed to be looking back at her.
At first light she leaned over the gunwale and let the heart slip from her palm. It went down without a splash, trailing its broken chain like a line let out to a fish. For a while she could still see it, a small blue glow sinking past the weeds, until the silt rose up and closed over it.
