Realistic red faceted gemstone tattoo on the forearm, with black facets and a soft shadow beneath it.

Red faceted gemstone on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large faceted gemstone, shaded in red with black recesses, sits on the outer forearm and appears to be a ruby or similar stone. The facets are rendered with sharp highlights and deep shadow, giving a glossy, three-dimensional look. A soft grey-red shadow falls beneath the stone on the skin, and the background shows a red and white patterned fabric and a grey speckled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Put the kettle on, Tom, and stop picking at that rope. You want the rest of it or you don't? Right. So the stone. Old Enid Parry had it off a dredger man at Hollin Lock in the hard winter, paid him four shillings and a bottle of gin, which was robbery on both sides. Red as a boiled sweet held up to a lamp, she said, and cut so many ways the light got lost in it and came back out wearing a different coat.

She kept it in a biscuit tin under the stove, wrapped in a bit of her late husband's neckerchief, and every evening she'd tip it onto the table and let the lamp do its trick. The wall went red. The ceiling went red. Her cat, Mister Pell, sat in front of it like a magistrate. Then the water bailiffs came up the cut in March asking after a cargo of stolen cutlery and a pearl necklace, and nobody on that stretch had ever seen either.

Enid didn't hide it. That's the part folk never believe. She put it in the lock-keeper's box on the top gate, under the greasy tin of grease and the spare windlass, and she wrote on a slip of paper, 'Return to whoever's honest enough to ask.' Then she went back to her boat and sat with the kettle until the bailiffs had gone. Nobody asked. Six years on it's still in that box, I'm told, and the lads who fix the gate say when the sun comes low through the lock it throws red up the stone like something's bleeding light.

So you see, Tom, a stone like that doesn't want a home. It wants to be looked at by someone who won't own it. Now drink your tea before it stews.
