Dear Tomasz, The lorry driver from Barstow left the stone with me on Tuesday instead of the cash he owed, and I have been looking at it under the lamp since. Pink, the colour of the inside of a shell, and cut so many ways that the light doesn't know where to stop. Mum would have called it vulgar. I think she would have wanted it.

The road out past the water tower has been quiet since they moved the depot. Nobody comes through now unless they are lost or running. The man who brought it said his wife's grandfather bought it in Johannesburg in 1961 and carried it across three borders sewn into a coat lining. He said it was pink because the mine it came from had a red seam, and that stones take the colour of whatever they are kept against. I didn't believe him, and I still don't, but I put it on a square of blue velvet on the counter anyway.

Yesterday a girl came in with a sunburn and a cracked phone and asked what I'd give her for her grandmother's ring. I offered forty pounds. She looked at the stone on the velvet for a long time, then at me, and said she'd come back when she had a better story. I liked her for that.

So the stone is still here, pushed behind the till, throwing little pink coins across the wall every time a lorry rattles past. I have decided it is not for sale. Come out at Easter if you can. I'll show you the shadow it makes at four o'clock, when the sun gets under the awning, and you can tell me whether it looks like a ghost or a window.
