Realistic diamond on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large faceted diamond, shown from the front, fills most of the frame on the forearm. The facets are rendered with fine black linework and grey shading, with bright highlights suggesting light reflecting off the stone. The background is a blurred skin tone with a dark wooden surface and a denim-clad leg at the edge of the frame.

Sit nearer the brazier, children, and keep your hands off the glass lamp, because the story of the Quay stone needs the light kept low. Four hundred winters ago, when the sea still reached the old wharves of Harrowgate, a stone came up in a fisherman's net with a crack running through it like a river on a map. Nobody wanted it. The harbour reeve called it a bad sign, and the tallymen said it was worth nothing until it was cut, and cutting, as every cutter in the Quay will tell you, is how a stone learns to hold light.

So they sent it to Ada Brisk, who had hands like a mason and eyes gone pale from years over the wheel. She cut it the way the Quay cut everything, in a hundred flat faces that caught the lamp and threw it back at the rafters. The reeve came to see it finished. He stood in the workshop with his hat under his arm and said it was handsome, and it was: a great stone, fat at the middle and sharp at the foot, grey as a dove's back in the shade. Then he asked her to dull the crown a little, so the buyers from the upper city would not be dazzled.
Ada said nothing. She sent him out, barred the door, and worked through the night by one candle. When the bell rang for the fishers she threw back the shutters, and the sun came in low across the bench and struck a face she had cut on the underside, where no buyer would ever think to look. It lit the whole crown from beneath until the rafters blazed like a harbour at dawn.
The reeve came back to find his dull stone gone bright as a window. He took his hat off and held it over his heart, the way men do when the sea gives back what it took, and he did not ask her to dull anything again.
