In the years after the salt came up through the valley floor, the hydrangeas of Corran Hollow grew blue, and nobody could say why. Ysolde Marr, who kept the seed vault under the old reservoir, said it was the ground going sour, and sour ground was the last honest thing left in the valley. Her neighbour Pell thought it was the rain, which came down faintly blue from the dome vents and left a bloom on every window.

Pell had a daughter, Tamsin, who would not leave the lower terraces. Each morning she carried a tin of rainwater up the stone steps and poured it at the root of the big shrub by the gate. Each morning small blue dots rose from the wet earth and hung above the flowers like sparks off a grinding wheel. They drifted and never settled. Pell asked her what she was doing. Tamsin said she was keeping the flowers from forgetting which colour they had been.
When the dome shut for the winter and the vents stopped, the rain stopped with them. The shrub dried to brown paper and the dots went out one by one. Ysolde came down the steps with a sealed jar from the vault and found the girl kneeling in the dust, tipping her empty tin over the stones.
Ysolde knelt beside her and unscrewed the jar. The water inside was clear as glass, and when it touched the roots the leaves lifted green along the stem and the blue came back into the petals from the bottom up. Tamsin watched the first dot rise and asked if it would stay. Ysolde said it would stay as long as somebody came down with a bucket. That was the start of the rule in Corran Hollow, and the bucket still hangs on the gate.
