Blue lupin flower on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tall spike of blue lupin flowers runs diagonally across the forearm, with pale yellow buds at the top and green leaves fanning out along the lower stem. The petals are shaded from deep violet to lighter blue, giving each flower volume against a smooth, unshaded background of skin. The image is a close, well-lit photograph focused on the tattoo, with a dark leather surface behind the arm.

Mags had the ovens lit by four, the way Dennis liked it, though Dennis had been dead since March and the bread still came out of the same stone-floored room in the same grey hour. She stood at the sink scrubbing proving baskets and watched the window go from black to the colour of wet slate. Outside, along the yard wall, the lupins her husband had sown the first spring they took the lease stood shoulder high, their spikes heavy with dew.

She had told the lad from the agricultural college that lupins were a pest. He had nodded politely and asked whether the seed could go in the loaves, and she had laughed for the first time in weeks. Dennis had once tried exactly that, boiling the beans three times to strip the bitterness, and the result had been a loaf like a doormat that nobody bought twice. Still, the recipe lived in a tin on the shelf above the flour bins, written in his square capitals: SOAK, BOIL, BOIL AGAIN, DON'T ASK WHY.
The first van pulled into the lane at quarter past six. Mags lifted the trays from the racks, carried them through the swinging door, and laid the cobs out in a row while the shop filled with the smell of rye and warm butter. Then she noticed the tin was open, and the pencil that always lay beside it had rolled to the edge of the shelf.
She picked it up. Beneath Dennis's careful lines she wrote, in a hand that wobbled at the upstrokes, PLANT MORE. Then she went out into the yard in her apron, cut the tallest spike while the sun was still a rumour behind the hedge, and carried it in to stand in a jug on the counter where the first customer would see it.
