Puzzle pieces and leaves on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A foot is shown with a colour tattoo of jigsaw puzzle pieces in red, blue, orange and teal, linked by a sprig of green leaves on a thin stem. A dotted, beaded line rises from the ankle in a curve, and the pieces have soft, blended shading with defined outlines. The tattoo sits against plain pale skin on a light blue background, with the foot filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The rain has come back to Sheffield and the streetlamps on Division Street are doing that orange flicker they do before they give up. I'm writing at the bench with the cutter still warm, because I finished the last of Mr Abbott's boxes tonight and found a bag of spares tucked under the tray. Forty-one pieces, all cut by hand years ago, none of them from any picture I know. Red, blue, orange, and a teal the colour of the sea off Whitby. Someone was making a whole garden out of them and stopped halfway.
I sat there a long while sorting them by colour, the way Mum used to sort her buttons, and the strangest thing happened. Every blue piece had a bit of green stem caught in its edge, as if the leaves had grown right through the gaps. I know that's the lamp, and tiredness, and the beer I didn't finish. But I thought of the string of glass beads Mum wore on Sundays, the one she gave you and never gave me, and how it always ran up from her collar like a line you could follow home.
I'm sending you one piece. The orange one, with the leaf. Don't make it mean anything. Just put it on your windowsill where the night bus lights go past.
Come Sunday if you can. The cutter is still warm and I'd rather not finish these on my own.
Love, Jo
