Cherry blossom branch tattoo on a limb
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A branch of cherry blossom runs diagonally up the limb, with five pale pink open flowers, several closed buds and two green leaves. The petals are softly shaded with darker pink centres and the brown stem has gentle shading, giving a soft, lifelike look. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a tiled floor, with the design filling most of the frame.

The old cherry at the top of Ledger Lane had not flowered in three springs, and by the fourth Mrs Pryce had decided it was waiting on somebody. Nobody in Hollin Fold argued with her. She kept the post office and knew which doorsteps had gone quiet.

So when the carrier's boy, Alfie Dunn, came up the lane in April with a bundle of wet cuttings under his arm, she sent him straight to the orchard gate. 'Take the branch from the north side,' she told him, 'and don't you dare bring it back cut short.' He did as he was bid. He wrapped the stems in a sack and carried them down to the church hall, where Reverend Hale had been fussing over a jam jar of bare twigs since Lent.
By the Saturday the branch stood in a stone jar on the table by the door. Pale pink flowers had opened along it, five of them, with a scatter of closed buds below, as if the wood had only been waiting for a room full of people to look at it. Old Mr Rudd said it was a trick of the light. Mrs Pryce said nothing and went on stamping letters.
Alfie went back up the lane on Monday. The tree at the top was still bare, and it stayed bare. But the jar sat in the hall all that summer, and the water went brown at the edges, and the petals fell only when somebody moved it.
