Blue ink geometric mandala design on paper

Geometric · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a symmetrical mandala built from a central diamond with a radiating star, surrounded by circles, triangles and dotted rings. A long curved line with spirals and a small pointed base extends downward from the top, forming a vertical, elongated composition. It is rendered in blue ink with fine linework and stippled dots on white paper, set on a wooden surface with cream lace and sprigs of dried flowers.

Brother Tomas, the ink you sent from the coast has dried the colour of a bruise on the page, so I have traced the new chart over it in the good blue from the Salt Quarter, the one that does not run when wet. The Council wants the diamond at the centre of the Bell Tower dial, with the eight-pointed star cut where the sun falls at midsummer. I have told them the star must sit a finger's width off true, or the hour will be a lie by the first frost. They laughed. They always laugh at the girl who measures.

Father would have understood. He drew the dotted rings himself, one dot for every bell-ringer lost in the flood of the Grey Years, and he would not let anyone else place them. Yesterday I counted the dots twice and found one hundred and four, which is one more than the names in the register. I did not tell the Council. I added the last dot myself, very small, beside the spiral that climbs toward the weathervane, the one shaped like a folded wing.

Come home before the ice closes the north road. The spiral needs winding by two hands, and the lace on the kitchen table has gone yellow without you. Mother has been stitching the edges of the letter paper with the thread she keeps for christenings. She says the star will hold its shape only if somebody who loves it is standing beside it when the sun comes through.
