Gold henna-style flash sheet
Colour · Flash
A sheet of metallic gold temporary tattoo designs on white. It includes a round mandala, two paisley motifs with floral detail, two ornate vertical motifs, and several long bands with lace-like scallops, dots and chain patterns. The linework is fine and even, and the gold ink gives the whole sheet a uniform, reflective finish.

The braid on the ringmaster's coat has been lifting at the cuffs since Whitsun, and you are the only one left who knows how to lay it flat again. Mrs Pell keeps the spare reels in a biscuit tin under the wardrobe trunk: gold lace in scallops like a row of half moons, and the little rings that run along the seams, which you count while the needle goes in and out. The tent is down to forty seats now. The big top smells of wet canvas, and the ponies have started watching the gate as though they expect it to open for them.

Ashdown wants the coat for the last night at Harrow Green, when the council men arrive with their measuring tapes and their long faces. He says a crowd will pay for gilt. You say nothing, because the paisleys on the tent flaps still have their bunched flowers and curling teardrops, and you spent three winters stitching back the ones that rain and moth had taken. Every motif you save feels like a small argument won against the weather.
On the final evening you hang the coat on the centre pole and step back into the ring. Six people sit in the stands with their coats buttoned up to the chin. The lamps hum. Your thumb presses the last scallop flat along the left sleeve, and it holds.
When the lamps go out you sit in the sawdust with the spare reel in your lap. Ashdown's coat catches the last light from the wings and throws a ring of gold across the ground, round and whole, exactly where the crowd would have stood.
