Blue mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A circular mandala sits on the upper shoulder, built from a central rosette with scrolled linework, layered petals and a lace-like outer ring. Black linework and dense dotwork shading outline the design, while turquoise and pale blue fills give the petals depth. The tattoo fills the right-hand side of the frame against soft indoor lighting, with a navy lace top visible below.

Dad had the painter's habit of starting from the middle, so the rosette went on first and the petals grew outwards from it like rings on a pond. I was twelve, holding the tin of Prussian blue while he worked on the centre panel of the Waltzer, the bit nobody looked at until the bulbs came on.

"Not too much," he said, when I dipped the brush too deep. "The blue has to sit on the white, not drown it."
We packed the ride up every Sunday night in a field outside Stowmarket and set it up somewhere new on Monday, and the painted panels travelled with us in their crates, rattling over every pothole in East Anglia. Mum said the scrollwork looked like doilies. Dad said the old showmen painted rosettes to keep the bad luck off the machinery, and I believed him for about three summers.
The last year he was ill he couldn't manage the ladder, so I did the outer lace ring myself, tiny dots placed one at a time, each one a breath I held. When I finished he tilted his head at it from the back of the lorry and said nothing for so long I thought he had dozed off.
Then he said, "Turn it to the light. Let the lamp catch it." I angled the panel towards the bulb, and the blue lifted off the board like a flame, and that was the only time I ever heard him laugh about the work.
