Ornate elephant on a lower leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single elephant with its trunk curled up is outlined in bold black linework and filled with paisley, dot and flower motifs across its body, legs and head. The shading is solid black with fine detail in the decorative pattern, and the design is centred on the shin with a small amount of skin visible around it. The photograph shows a hand holding the leg and a purple and white striped sock, with the tattoo the clear focus.

Brother Anselm had painted the last dot on the elephant's left ear when the vespers bell cracked in the valley below. The carving was no bigger than a loaf, cut from pear wood, and the abbot had said it would be sold at the Haldwen market to pay for the roof. But Anselm had given it paisley across its back, lotus flowers climbing its legs, and a trunk curled high as if it were listening for rain.

That night the elephant was gone from the shelf. Brother Oswin swore he had seen it trotting along the cloister wall, its painted feet leaving small dark dots on the flagstones. The monks followed those dots down the mountain path, past the mill and the frozen ford, until they came to a cart stopped in the road. A merchant's boy called Tobiah sat in the snow beside it, crying over a broken wheel that had snapped under a load he could not account for.
When the monks reached him the elephant was standing in the snow by the wheel, trunk lifted, and the wheel was whole again, its spokes shining with the same black ink as the carving. Tobiah stopped crying long enough to ask whether the monks had come for the grain money, and Oswin said they had come for the elephant.
Anselm did not ask for it back. He sat down on the cart's tailboard and began to paint the boy's doors, dot by dot, until every panel in Haldwen had flowers on it. The abbey roof was never mended, but nobody in the valley went hungry that winter, and when the snow lies deep on the ridge, people say a small painted elephant still walks the high path, leaving its prints behind it.
