The brothers came up the forest road in the hungry month, when the beech mast had failed and the millers had shut their doors. Hal knew the walk before he knew the faces. Nine winters had not taught Wat to carry himself straight.

They had put Hal down the dry well at the edge of Coldharrow, under the old ash, and taken his coat and the jet beads his mother had strung for him. Then they had gone off to sell him to the carters bound for Lincoln. The carters did not want a boy who could not stop crying, so he walked home through the trees on the wrong side of the path. His mother had tied a blue ribbon to the gate so he would know which door was his. She died before the spring.
Hal had the keys to the granary now. He weighed out the barley without speaking while Wat's hands shook on the sack. "We did not think you would be anybody," Wat said at last. Hal nodded, as a man nods to a neighbour, and asked after their wives and their children by name.
When the sacks were tied, Hal went into the house and came back with the rosary. The jet had gone dull with handling and one bead was missing. He hung it on the nail by the door, where the cross could turn when the wind came under the eaves, and left the ribbon on the gate to fade in the weather.
