Heart loop tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a heart at the top of a single looping line, shaped like an infinity sign, sits on the inside of a wrist. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is lit warmly against a dark background with blurred coloured lights, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the rope across her knees before the whistle, working the tarred hemp the way her mother had taught her, a single line that folded back on itself and never quite finished. The engineer at Brackenhill called it a cage line, though the men on the pit top called it the hangman's ribbon when they wanted to be unkind. Ada called it nothing. She only made it come out right.

Her husband Samuel had gone down the shaft at six with a tin of cold tea and a sore left shoulder. Each morning she tied the loop, then a small heart at its head, pushed through with a bodkin so the lay sat tight. Samuel laughed at it once and said the cage men would think she was courting them. She told him the heart was for the crossing back, the bit where the line turned and came home again.

The bell rang at a quarter past two. Three short pulls, then nothing. Ada kept her hands moving. The rope in her lap grew a second loop, then a third, and the copper lamp on the sill threw her shadow across the wall in long, patient waves. Somewhere under the hill the cage was still hanging, and she would not let the line go slack.

At half past four the cage came up with two men on it and a blackened tin that was not Samuel's. Ada stood, and the rope slid from her knees and lay across the flagstones in its unbroken figure of eight, heart at the top, ready for whoever needed to find their way back.
