Blue ribbon and fish hook heart on wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
A blue awareness ribbon loops around a black outlined fish hook that forms the shape of a heart, and the word Daddy is written in black script along the hook's shank. The ribbon is shaded in several tones of blue with soft highlights, while the hook and lettering use clean dark linework. The design is centred on a pale wrist against a teal and green patterned fabric background.

The hook came out of the bream's lip on the third cast, and Dad held it up to the light above the reeds like a jeweller checking a stone. "Bent a touch," he said, and passed it to me with the pliers. "Straighten it, Ada, and it'll hold another fifty years." I was nine and took him literally, so I spent ten minutes on the bank of Hollin Mere working the wire back into shape while the herons stood about in the shallows pretending not to watch.

Hollin was the village at the edge of the wood, and the mere sat behind the alders where the path gave out. Every August the parish held its angling match there, and Dad won the blue rosette four years running, pinning it to the kitchen dresser as if it were the Crown Jewels. He never once said he'd won it. He said the fish had been careless, and that carelessness was the only thing you could count on in a pond.
The last summer, the council drained the mere for dredging and cancelled the match. I walked the cracked mud on my own with the hook in my coat pocket. The silt was full of things the water had kept: rusted tins, a pram wheel, a sunken rowing boat with its name still legible on the transom, and a scatter of old lures with their paint worn to bare metal.
That evening I took the rosette from the dresser drawer, threaded the hook through its loop, and tied the whole thing to the lowest branch of the alder where the path gave out. The wind came up off the empty bed of the mere and turned it slowly, the blue catching the last of the light, and I left it there for whoever came looking for something to hold on to.
