Blue rose tattoo on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a bare upper back and shoulder showing a large blue rose with dark grey leaves and a few small buds. Smaller dark foliage is visible further up towards the neck. The rose has bold dark outlines, with blue shading that gives it a solid, dimensional look against the skin, and the image is shot in a dim, low-contrast setting.

You learn the trick of the blue rose the summer you're eleven, crouched behind the striped awning of Hallam's Travelling Fair while the generator coughs in the field. Your uncle Teddy keeps the bucket under a tarpaulin: white roses cut that morning from the allotments at Stowbridge, stems sliced on the slant, then stood in water laced with indigo and a spoon of washing soda. By nine they drink the colour up through their petals, leaf by leaf, until the blooms look like something pulled out of a dream.

Customers pay two pounds a throw at the hoopla, and the prize is always the same, a single blue rose in a cellophane sleeve. Nobody asks where blue roses grow. Teddy says the trick is never to tell them the truth, which is that the flower was white at lunchtime. You wrap them in tissue for a girl from the big dipper queue, a boy who wants one for his mum, and a man in a dark coat who buys three and never says a word.
On the last night the field is wet and the lights go out early. You find the bucket knocked over, the water gone the colour of a bruise, and the roses lying limp on the grass. Teddy kneels beside them, quiet, and you expect him to swear. Instead he lifts the best one, sniffs it, and says the thing he always says: "Pale things take the blue better than the proud ones."
You take the last rose home in your coat pocket. By morning its petals have faded to the same grey as the leaves, but you keep it anyway in a jam jar on the windowsill, a little blue still held at the heart.
