Blue scallop shell tattoo on the side of the body

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A scallop shell with fanned ridges fills the centre of the frame, drawn with fine black lines and softly blended shading. The colour moves from deep navy at the edges to pale teal near the hinge. The shell sits on smooth skin against a plain background, with a patterned fabric visible at the top right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had been counting the tide-lines on the breakwater since before the gulls woke, and by the time Aunt Ida came down the steps with her basket the water had pulled back far enough to show the sand ribbed like a washboard. "You'll not get the big ones this side," Ida said. "They lie deep where the weed goes dark."

Mara went anyway. She waded out past the rocks where the cold climbed through her boots, feeling with her toes for the hinge of a shell buried flat. Scallops, her father used to say, can swim when they are frightened, clapping their two valves like a pair of hands, so you had to be quick to lift one before it fled. The first she found was chipped. The second was a deep blue, the colour of the sky just after the lamps are lit, fanned with ridges that ran from the hinge to the rim like the spokes of a cart wheel.

She carried it back to Ida in both palms, not trusting it to the basket. Ida turned it over, pressed her thumb against the hinge, and laughed the short laugh she kept for things that surprised her. "Your father brought one of these home the year the boats didn't come back," she said. "Said it was the only thing the sea ever gave him that didn't ask for something in return."

That evening Mara set the shell on the windowsill, where the last of the light lay across its ridges and turned the teal near the hinge to pale water. In the morning it was still there, and the tide had gone out again, further than before.
