Two shell tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two shell designs sit on the inner forearms of a person whose hands are pressed together in front of a pink top. The left tattoo shows a whelk shell in black outline with blue watercolour wash, while the right shows a scallop shell in black linework with a coral watercolour wash behind it. Both designs use loose wash areas that fade beyond the outlines, and the colour is limited to blue and coral against the black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The coconut shies have been on the Dunmore field since Tuesday, and by Thursday your hands smell of wet canvas and diesel. Uncle Ivo keeps the spare prize cups in a biscuit tin under the generator, and he has given you the job of rinsing them at the standpipe behind the dodgems, where the water runs so cold it stings your knuckles. You don't mind. It is the only quiet place on the whole site.

In the bottom of the tin, beneath the bolts and the cracked spanner, you find two shells that were never prizes. One is a whelk, its spiral ridged like a stack of pale ribbons, and the other is a scallop with its fan of ribs worn smooth at the edges. Ivo won them off a sailor at a card table in Morecambe, he says, and the sailor swore they had come up in a fishing net off the bar. You have never seen him lose a bet on anything smaller than a horse, so you believe the story more than you should.

On Thursday night the generator coughs and the lights on the big wheel go dark, one car at a time, until only the candy floss lamp is left burning over the empty stall. Folk start to drift off towards the car park. You walk down to the standpipe with the whelk in one hand and the scallop in the other, and you hold the whelk to your ear the way Ivo taught you. There is only the hum of the fair and the slow drip of water. You set both shells on the wet concrete ledge, facing the road out, and leave them there for whoever comes next.
