Scallop shell tattoo on the side ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A scallop shell with radiating ridges is tattooed on the side of a torso. The ribbing is rendered with fine shading that gives the shell depth and a soft three-dimensional look. The ink is entirely grey and black on light skin, and the shell sits centrally in a close crop with hair at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shooting gallery had already been folded into its van when Ruth found the shell in the bottom of the coconut-shy bucket, wedged under a tin of wax polish. Someone had won it at Margate the summer before and kept it since, the way people keep things that have no use. She turned it over in her palm. Forty-one ridges fanned out from the hinge, each one raised like the teeth of a comb, and the grooves between them had gone the colour of old pencil.

Her father, who had run the waltzer for thirty years and trusted nothing that didn't spin, told her scallops could swim. He'd seen them do it off the pier at Whitstable, clapping their two halves and jetting across the sand like a dropped purse. Ruth doubted it. Still, she kept the shell in the pocket of her cardigan through the long drive north, where the caravans rattled behind the lorry and the lights of the ghost train blinked on the back of the tarpaulins.

At the last stop, a seaside car park above a harbour wall, the fair set up for one night only. Ruth walked down to the water while the generators coughed into life. The tide was out, and the sand was ribbed in the same pattern as the shell, a hundred fine lines running from the land toward the sea. She crouched and pressed the shell into the wet ground. Its ridges fitted the ripples almost exactly, as if it had been made there and only lifted out of the sand for a while.

When the tide came back she was already gone, but the shell stayed where she left it, its grooves filling with water until the sea took it out past the wall, opening and closing like a hand that couldn't decide whether to wave.
