Blue swirl tattoo on the top of a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A stylised blue tattoo of a looping, swirling form resembles a wave or a heart, with the lines curling into one another at the centre. The linework is smooth, with shading in several blues and lilac tones and pale highlights along the strokes, plus a few small light dots. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on pale skin, with the rest of the foot and a sheet visible at the edges.

My job was to write down where it stopped.

Her cousin Owen had left the log in the gatehouse, a damp book with a cracked spine and forty years of pencilled heights. Every page carried a small mark in the top corner, a looping wave that folded back on itself at the centre. He called it the knot. Nobody knew who drew it first. I asked the vicar, the postmistress and the man who sold bait, and each one shrugged and said the marks were older than they were.
On the last page Owen had written in a hurry: high water, nine minutes past eleven, a line of blue spray on the north wall shaped like a heart pulled sideways. Beneath it, a second line. Come up. The bell is still going.
I stood in the wet cold of the gatehouse and listened. Nothing rang but the sea. I took the pencil from behind my ear and drew the knot in the corner of the page, and the water, which had been pushing at the threshold all evening, drew back one step.
