Swirled heart on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart outline with a looping curl extending from its lower right point sits on the side of an ankle. The linework is single black ink with even, smooth strokes and no shading. The plain pale skin and soft, neutral background keep the tattoo as the clear focus of the photograph.

The boats had been gone four nights when Morwenna Pell carried the last spool of tarred twine down to the harbour wall and found a length of line lying coiled on the cold stones, its end curled back on itself like a question. Nobody in Porthgwidden owned it. The men who mended nets there knew their own knots, and this one was tied in a loop nobody had used since her grandmother's day.

She picked it up. It was wet through, though the tide had been out since noon, and when she turned it over a tin heart no bigger than a thumbnail was bound into the splice, hammered thin and pierced with a single hole. She knew the work. Her uncle Jory had made such hearts for the wives of the Lady Wren crew, to hang on the mast so the boat would bring their men home, and he had stopped making them the winter the Wren went down off the Lizard with all hands.

Morwenna walked the wall to the end, where the lamp was lit, and stood until the sea showed a dark hull coming round the point. She did not wave. She untied the loop, let the line fall, and counted the boats in as they came: nine, then eight, then nine again when the last one slipped over the bar on the ebb with a torn sail and a stranger at the tiller wearing Jory's oilskin.

The stranger climbed onto the stones and held out a hand, open, with nothing in it. 'He said to give you this back,' the man said, and pressed the curled rope into her palm. Morwenna closed her fingers on it and found the tin heart warm, as if someone had only just let go of it.
