Blue TARDIS tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small blue police box with white windows, a dark outline and a small light on its roof sits on the ankle of a pale leg. The shading is solid and graphic, with smooth blue tones, black edges and white highlights, and the design looks like a temporary transfer rather than a healed tattoo. The composition places a red patent high-heeled shoe with white scalloped trim in the lower frame against a plain blue backdrop.

The box came through the receiving hatch at Tollgate Nine on a Tuesday, which is the only reason I remember it. Tuesdays are for tinned goods and broken clocks. This one was blue, the height of a tall man, and it arrived with a small lamp still lit on its roof, a yellow eye that blinked at intervals nobody in the bay could explain.

Dorrit, who has worked the cargo floor longer than the floor has had a name, wanted it scrapped for the brass. I signed the form that said unclaimed and sat down beside it with my tea. The door had white-framed windows, six of them in two rows, and when I pressed my palm to the panel it was warm, like bread fresh from the oven. Nobody had a reason to own it, except that it kept arriving.
On the third night the lamp went out and the hum stopped, and a woman's voice came from inside asking whether anyone had seen her red shoe. I said no. She said she had put it down somewhere around 1963 and would be back for it. I told her the depot held nothing from 1963. She laughed, a bright and unbothered sound, and said, "Then I'll have to come and fetch it myself."
I still have the form. Under claimant I wrote the name she gave me, Ilse, and under collection date I left the box empty, because it has not come back for her yet. Some evenings the lamp blinks at me across the bay, and I blink back, the way you would to a neighbour across a narrow street.
