A solid silhouette of a squirrel with a large bushy tail, filled with a red and black tartan check pattern. Thin white highlight lines run along the tail and body, giving a slight sense of dimension. The tattoo sits centrally on a bare lower leg against a soft, blurred background.

Dear Morag, you will not believe what the squirrel has done. Since Tuesday the red one that lives in the big larch behind the mill has been carrying off every offcut Alasdair leaves on the bench. Not the grey wool from the town, mind, only the red and black, the Gordon piece he was cutting for the Hendry wedding. I found a strip of it wound round the gatepost like a bandage, and when I climbed the ladder to look, the drey was lined with it so thick you could have sat a hen on it.

Alasdair says a squirrel has no business with a sett and swears he will set a trap. But I watched it last night from the kitchen window. It sat on the wall in the lamplight, turning a scrap over in its paws the way you turn a letter you have decided not to answer. Then it ran straight up the larch and vanished into the dark with the whole length of cloth trailing behind it like a banner.

Here is the strange part. The Hendry bride came by this morning to ask after her sash, and when I told her about the squirrel she laughed until she had to sit down on the step. Her grandmother, she says, always claimed the family luck walked out of the woods on red feet, and that you only had to leave it a little cloth and it would give you back the rest.

I have put the last length of the Gordon on the wall tonight, folded neat, with a heel of bread beside it. Tell Alasdair not to touch it.
