Red diamond tattoo on the top of a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A bare foot and lower leg rest on a textured carpet, with a red diamond tattoo on the top of the foot near the toes. The gem is drawn with faceted edges, light reflections and smooth shading, and a soft red glow spreads beneath it. The toenails match the red ink, and two silver toe rings sit on the toes beside the design.

The stone came up from the Kessa shaft wrapped in a wet grey sock, because nobody on Halden Station searched a sock twice. Old Imre had cut rough carbon for forty years, and when he finally split the bead under his lamp, the whole workshop went quiet. The facets threw a red fire so deep it looked wet. He called it the Oxblood Cut. I called it trouble, and sewed it into the lining of my boot before the morning shift.

Customs on the Vesta ring read density and nothing else, so the scanner passed me without a murmur. What it could not read was the light. On the third day, a dockhand at the lift stopped me and asked why the seam of my boot was glowing. I told him it was the heater coil, and he laughed and waved me on. Nobody else asked. Each step left a faint red smear on the grating, like someone spilling wine.

The buyer waited in a bar that smelled of ozone and cheap ice. He tipped the stone onto a cloth and the table turned the colour of a sunset. Three ships, he said. Maybe four. I nodded, but my eyes kept going to the grating outside, where the light from my boot had settled into the seams and stayed there, a thin red line leading back to the lift, as if the stone wanted to be found again.
