Blue wave and spiral emblem on an ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo sits inside a solid circle, formed from three spirals across the top and several horizontal wave lines below. The linework is an even, consistent blue outline with no shading, and the design fills the centre of the frame against plain skin. The photograph is taken straight on, with a red cloth visible at the left edge.

Marta had been working the lock at Brindley Basin since ten, and the rain had not stopped once. Under the sodium lamp the water in the chamber lay flat as tin, and she could hear the gates groan before she saw them move. Her father had taught her the sequence the way other fathers taught hymns: paddles, sluice, beam, then wait. Wait was the part nobody believed in.

Tonight the chamber held a tug's wash and an argument between two bargemen about whose turn it was. She kept her hands in her coat pockets and watched a moth knock itself against the lamp. Up the towpath a delivery van idled with its hazards blinking orange on the wet brick, and a man in a grey hood climbed out to stare at the water as if it owed him money too.
When the levels finally matched, she pulled the paddle and the water began to turn. It went first in one slow coil beside the cill, then in three small spirals that rode the surface and folded back on themselves. The bargemen stopped arguing. The man in the hood came down to the railing and stood very still.
Her father had painted the same mark on the gate beam forty years ago, a ring of blue with curls at the top and wave lines beneath, so the boats would know which lock was which. She had gone over it again in spring with a brush and a tin of enamel. Now the rings opened in the lamplight and closed again, and the man lifted one hand and pressed his palm flat against the blue ring on the gate, leaving a wet print that the rain began at once to fill in.
