Four element symbols down a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a lower leg with four stacked black line tattoos: a circle with wave lines, a square with horizontal bands, a flame and a spiral. The linework is a single consistent black weight with no shading, and the lines are clean and even. The image is taken from the front, with the symbols running vertically down the centre of the leg against a plain grey floor.

The rain has been coming sideways across the car park since seven, and by half past eleven the tarpaulins over the fish stalls are sagging like wet sheets. You have set up beside the chip van because it is the only pitch with a roof of its own, a corrugated lean-to bolted to the wall of the old cattle market. Your trestle table holds four clay bowls, each glazed a different dull colour, and a tin of matches. Nobody has stopped for an hour.

Then an old man in a boiler suit stops, shakes the water from his cap, and points at the bowl with wave lines scratched into its rim. "That one's for sea-sick," he says. "Tea with salt in it. My mother swore by it." You tell him the bowls are not medicine. He says everything is medicine if you're desperate enough. You fill the bowl from the flask anyway, because the market has turned into the bottom of a harbour and you have never liked to see a man go thirsty.

He drinks it standing up, watching the flame under the little brass kettle, blue at the base and yellow at the tip. He asks which of the four you would keep if you could only keep one. You say the spiral, because air gets into everything, and the square, because earth is what you stand on. He laughs and says that is the answer of a man who has never been drowned or burnt. Then he pays you in three coins and walks off into the grey without looking back.

After he has gone you turn the bowls so their rims face the kettle. The rain keeps falling. Somewhere down the aisle a van door bangs, the kettle begins to sing, and you realise you have been holding your breath the whole time. You let it out. The water in the first bowl is still steaming, a thin thread of it lifting straight up, unbothered by the wet.
