Blue wave circle on the foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A small circular tattoo sits on the top of a foot close to the toes. The left half is filled with flowing blue wavy lines in varying shades, while the right half is an open outline that fades into the skin. The ink is a clean, bold line with a simple colour palette against a light, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm kept the tide-book at Saint Ebba's the way other men kept goats, grumbling and counting. Every morning before the bell he walked the causeway with his lantern and came back to record where the sea had got to overnight. I was set to copy his figures in a neat hand, because my letters were the only ones he could read without squinting.

The circle was his idea. He drew it on a slate in chalk, a ring with a line cutting across it, and explained that the water was never all in or all out, only some of it, always moving over the line. The left half he wanted filled with the sea as it came in, lapping over itself in bands of paler and deeper blue. The right half he left open, because that was the sand the sea had not yet claimed. "Ink is the same," he said. "Fill what you know. Leave the rest to the tide."

The winter the causeway stayed under for nine days, he stopped writing. He sat in the scriptorium with his hands tucked into his sleeves while I climbed the tower to read the gauge against the wall. On the tenth morning the water had drawn back past the old stone mark, and he came down the stairs without his lantern, calling for the ledger like a boy.

I finished the page that day. Beneath the last tide I wrote the figure, then drew the small ring he had taught me, shaded blue on the side where the water stood, and left the other side bare for whatever the sea would bring next.
