Stylised wave in a circle on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised wave curls inside a circular frame, with the crest drawn as layered white and pale blue shapes. The linework is bold and black, and the water is filled with flat blue, teal and sage green sections. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner forearm against a patterned quilt.

Dear Mags, the pears came in early this year, so Dad has had us up the ladders since six, and I am writing with apple juice on my fingers, so forgive the smudges. The new picker from Hereford cannot tell a Discovery from a Bramley to save her life, but she laughs at everything and the bees seem to like her, which is more than can be said for me.

Something odd happened on Tuesday. Old Mr Pryce's roundel finally came down from the landing window, the one with the wave in it that you always said looked like a bowl somebody had dropped in the sea. He wanted it rehung in the barn before the sale, and when I lifted it out the light went right through the blue, the teal and the sage, and the whole barn floor filled up with moving water. I stood there like a fool holding a pane of glass with my mouth open.
The glazier's bill is in the drawer under the scales, if you want to check my sums. I did not tell Pryce about the floor. He would only have said the sun was at a funny angle, which is what he says about everything he cannot be bothered to look at twice.
Anyway, come for the last weekend in August. Bring the good secateurs and the jar of your mother's chutney. I will show you the light on the barn floor before it goes. Love, Nell.
