Blue wing tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A teal and blue wing with dark feather outlines and shading runs up the back of a lower leg, just above the ankle. The feathers fan out in layered rows, with lighter blue highlights toward the tips and darker shading near the base. The subject is shown against grey pavement with strong shadows, and the wearer's white and green trainers fill the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sports hall at Harrowgate Road still smells of floor polish and cheap orange squash, and someone has pinned the old Year Nine art display along the climbing bars. You find your glider first. It is folded from a page of the geography textbook, and the blue felt-tip you coloured its wings with has bled through to the other side, the way it always did. Nobody has moved it in twenty years, which tells you something about the caretaker's sense of sentiment.

Ruth Okafor finds you by the squash table, holding a paper cup in both hands. "You still owe me a bet," she says. Thirty years ago she wagered you a packet of Polos that the glider would never clear the gym doors. It did, just, and then it wheeled out over the bike shed and came down in the gutter. Mr Hale fished it out, kept it on the windowsill of his lodge for a week, and returned it with a note in capitals: GOOD FLYING. You never did pay her. She laughs and says the Polos were a loan, and the interest is a second cup of squash.

Later you step out into the car park. The late sun throws the shadow of the school sign across the tarmac, its lettering stretched thin and long, and beside it the shape of a single wing lies flat and dark, pointing towards the road. You fold the glider back along its creases, slide it into your coat pocket, and walk the length of that shadow to your car, letting it lead you out of the gates.
