Palm tree tattoo on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A slim, solid black palm tree sits on the outer ankle, with a thin curved trunk and a tufted crown of fronds. The photograph is taken from behind, with the leg and white platform shoes in the foreground and a skateboard with red wheels beneath. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin, and the background of tiled ground and a window stays muted.

The palm came up through a crack in the car park behind the fish market the year the harbour wall went into the sea. Nobody had planted it. Gulls nested in its crown and the council wanted it cut down, but Mrs Okafor, who sold ices from the van by the bins, said a tree that grew out of concrete had earned its place.

Tobias Greer had a board made of warped maple and wheels painted pillar-box red from a tin left behind by the lifeboat crew. Every evening he rode the cracked promenade past the palm, and every evening he went a little further, past the bench with the missing slat, past the rusted rail, out towards the place where the tarmac gave up and only sand was left. His mother told him the sea kept what it wanted. He said he only wanted to see the end of the road.
In October a gale came in off the water and the wind took the board clean out of his hands. He went after it onto the sand and the tide came up behind him faster than a boy could run. He was found in the morning curled under the fronds of the palm, which had bent over him like a roof, the board wedged safe against its trunk with one red wheel still turning.
The council sent a man with a saw that week. He stood under the crown for a long time, then drove back without it. The tree had leaned over the wall, and nobody could bring themselves to take the one thing on that promenade that had kept its footing.
