Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A rear view of a person's lower leg and ankle, wearing red tartan wedge boots with gold chain detailing. A small wing tattoo sits on the outer ankle, drawn in dark outline with grey shading. The background is a grey paved surface, and the tattoo is the only area of skin with ink.

Mother Hesketh had promised the lighthouse widow a pair of boots before the herring fair, and by the third night of the gale she had cut the uppers from a red tartan she could not afford. She built the wedge soles from cork and old net-floats so the widow would walk above the wet cobbles like a woman with somewhere to be.

The gold chain came from the drowned purser's watch-fob, brought up in a crab pot off the Scar. Hesketh stitched it down the side link by link, and each time the needle caught she heard the bell buoy out past the harbour mouth, ringing with no wind to move it. Two boats had not come home. Their wives came to the shed to ask whether the boots were for them, and Hesketh said no, they were for whoever walked the long road to the pier.
On the morning of the fair the widow came for them and would not try them on. "I know the ones who wear wings," she said, and laughed, and Hesketh did not ask what she meant. The widow set the boots on the step and walked off down the cobbles, and the chain swung and rang against the heel with every stride.
By noon the wind had turned. The *Gannet* came in on the flood with her crew alive, and the bell buoy rang once and went quiet. Hesketh swept the step and found a small grey feather caught in the chain, and she tied it to the boot's buckle where anyone passing could see it.
