Fine line sprig on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small sprig of branching stems with thin, short offshoots forms a gentle curve across the inner upper arm. The linework is delicate and even, rendered in a single dark ink with no shading. The pale skin and dark fabric of a sleeve frame the tattoo against a blurred indoor background.

Wren Oddie carried the cutting inside her collar, where the heat off the salt flats could not reach it. The old men at Harrowmere had said the sprig must reach the Stillwater well before the dew burned off the crust, or the sprig would dry to paper and the walk would have been for nothing. She set off before the sun was a hand's width above the wall.

The cutting had come from the last hedge left behind the reclamation wall, a thorny thing her grandmother had kept alive in a clay pot under a shutter. Her grandmother used to say that a branch bends toward whoever tends it, and that was why the pot had to sit in the window where the light fell. Wren had watered it with the grey water from the washing trough every morning for eleven years, and she had never once seen it lean.
The keeper of the Stillwater well was a thin man with a copper ear-trumpet, and he looked at her collar for a long time before he spoke. "What do you bring to the water?" he asked. Wren drew the sprig out. Its stems branched like a river seen from high up, and the offshoots were short and fine, as though someone had drawn them with the point of a needle. "The well takes only what it can name," he said.
She thought of her grandmother's hands, which had smelled of soap and iron, and she said the name aloud. The water stirred, and the cutting drank, and the dry stems swelled green at the tips.
Wren walked home with the dew still glittering on the crust. The sprig lay on her palm, curved gently like an arm around a shoulder, and it did not lean toward the wall or the sun. It leaned toward her.
