Bold black script lettering, set vertically

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single word in thick, rounded handwritten-style script is set vertically on a plain cream background. The strokes are solid black with smooth, even edges, and a small dot sits above the top letter. The composition is centred with generous empty space around the lettering, so it reads as a clean graphic design.

Dessa had been up the scaffold since six, the wind off the estate car park tugging at her overalls. Sixteen storeys of grey render rose above her, and the housing association had decided the stairwell side of Hollins House needed a word. The brief came on the back of a takeaway menu: one fat, looping stroke, stacked vertically so anyone waiting at the bus shelter would read it from the bottom up. Nobody had said what the word was. Tomasz, holding the paint pot at the base of the ladder, said it looked like something his nan used to write on the fridge.

Her brush was a size twelve sable her father had given her before he stopped painting signs and started selling them. She had not loaded one for a wall in years, and the first curve came out too thin, so she wiped it and tried again with her shoulder rather than her wrist. Each letter had to lean into the next the way people lean into a queue, and the trick was to keep the stroke wet enough that the edges stayed smooth in the wind. By the third afternoon her forearm ached and her hair was flecked cream and black.

A boy from flat nine came to the bottom of the ladder every day after school and read the letters aloud as they appeared, sounding each one out with his chin tipped back. On the last afternoon he stopped mid-word and shouted up that it was a different word entirely, something about a bus, and that he had decided it was true. Dessa leaned over the rail. She left the dot for last, a small round stop of black paint above the top stroke, and when she climbed down he was still grinning up at it, reading it his own way.
