Cat on crescent moon with bats and stars
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink cat sits on a crescent moon on the upper back, with a curling tail-like swirl below it, two small bats above and to the side, one bat lower left, and several four-pointed stars scattered around. The cat and bats are solid black silhouettes, while the moon has a softer shaded edge. The image is in natural window light, with a grey sports bra and the back of the head visible, and the composition is centred on the shoulder blade.

Nobody aboard the Halcyon Marrow would admit to liking the cat, so I was allowed to keep the middle watch. Mr Pennock said a black cat at sea was bad luck, and then he fed me the fish heads anyway. The rats had learned that I did not sleep. They came up through the bilge while the hull creaked like a loose door, and I sat on the rail where the moon could see me.

Three nights out of Valparaíso the moon went thin, a crescent sharp enough to shave with, and the sea lay flat as slate. Pennock's boy, Tobias, who was nine and had never seen anything but Bristol, climbed up beside me with a biscuit in his fist and asked whether the moon was a boat too. I told him the moon only looked as if it was carrying us. Bats came out of the rigging then, a dozen of them, wheeling round the topmast like loose thoughts, and Tobias counted them until he ran out of numbers.
The stars were the only honest things on the ship, he said, because they never pretended to be anywhere else. I did not argue. I curled my tail round my paws the way the carpenter tied off a rope, and watched the galley lamp go out one porthole at a time.
When we raised the Lizard in the grey of morning, Pennock took off his hat and said the cat had brought us home. I let him believe it. A cat wants no thanks, only a warm plank and a clear sky, and a few stars to keep the count.
