The storm took the power to the east wing at ten past two, just as I was wheeling a linen trolley past the lifts. The corridor went black, then a sickly green from the exit signs, and somewhere a monitor kept beeping on its battery as if nothing had happened. Sister Agnes Dunn was already shouting for torches, and I was already on my knees at the open drawer of the emergency kit, hunting for the spare batteries nobody had replaced since spring.

I counted between the flashes and the thunder the way my dad taught me on the coast, one for every second. The crack came on four, which meant the storm was moving off, and I told myself that was good news. Mr Pell in bay six wanted to know whether the whole town had gone dark, and I said I thought it was just us, which was a lie I could tell him without feeling bad about it.

The generator took eleven seconds to catch. I counted those too. Then the strip lights stuttered back one tube at a time, and the monitors found their proper rhythm again, and Agnes let out a breath she had clearly been holding since the first bang.

When I got back to the desk she had written the time on the whiteboard in capitals and underlined it twice: POWER BACK 02:31. Under it, in the space where the night's odd events go, I drew a small bolt with a dot beside it, because someone had to log the storm, and it seemed fair that the one who'd counted it should have the pen.
