Double chevron tattoos on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against a woman's neck and chest, with two groups of small black double chevrons visible. One group sits across the middle finger and the other across the back of the hand, each made of two parallel angled strokes. The thin, even linework is set against pale skin and a bright pink top, with the subject's hair falling at the left edge.

The chevrons went up on the harbour wall the August the Mary Ann was sold to Peterhead men, and nobody asked me to paint them, which is why I did it at four in the morning with a tin of Admiralty grey and a size-two brush. Two strokes to a mark, angled like the fletching on a bolt, pointing the way the channel bends past the Carrack. Fog came in off the bar most evenings that year, and the fleet had stopped trusting the old beacon.

Dad said they were vanity. He stood at the top of the slip with his pipe gone cold and watched me work along the wall from the gate to the net loft. "You can't steer by a thing a girl painted," he said. Then the Gannet came in on a Tuesday with Tom Penhale at the wheel and no visibility at all, and he followed the marks by feel, one after another, the way you'd follow a line of stitching in the dark.
The harbour master had them redone in proper yellow after that, and the council sent a letter with my surname spelled wrong. I kept the brush. Last winter I walked down at low water and found somebody had painted over the top three and left the bottom one standing, so the arrow now points at nothing but the sea wall. The boats still come home by it, a little wider of the rocks than they should be.
Some mornings I still walk the wall with a flask and count what's left of them, the way Dad counted boats through the gap at dusk: one, two, all in.
