Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A split image with a thin, bone-like linework design running diagonally down an arm, shown glowing pale against a saturated blue ultraviolet background. Her husband Donald thought it foolishness. "Bone is bone," he said, and went down to the boat before light. But she painted a thin line along the length of it, from the knuckled end to the tip, and when the wind dropped she carried it up the stair and set it in the lantern room where the glass could reach it.
In daylight it looked like nothing, a grey stick with knobs on it. But when the sun went down and the lamp was turned low, the line woke. It glowed the pale colour of a gull's underside, and the Macleod boys, coming in blind through the spray, saw it running out over the water like a path someone had laid for them.
Donald came home that night with his hands raw and said nothing more about foolishness. He hung the bone above the kitchen door. The paint has worn away now, the old women on the mainland say, but the sea still lights up along that line whenever a boat is near enough to need it.
