"I'm Fine" script on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show the same pair of bare legs, with a tattoo reading "I'm Fine" in black script lettering on the outer thigh above the knee. The lines are bold and uneven, with the letters sitting at an angle to each other. The image is black and grey and includes a plain carpet background with no visible faces.

The brush had been dragging all morning, so Nell Quarrie let the enamel pool on the board and went to fill the kettle instead. Gulls worked the harbour wall outside her shop in Carrick Bay. Inside, the lettering on her bench waited for a hand that would hold still.

Tobias Hale came in at eleven with his cap in both fists and asked for a board for the boat shed door. Three words, he said, and then he stopped, as though the rest of the sentence had been left on the quay. She asked what the words were. He said them slowly, and she chalked them on the slate before he could change his mind: I'm Fine. He nodded at the slate the way men nod at a bill they had expected.

She painted it in the afternoon with a size-four sable, the letters leaning on one another like old men at the end of a bar. The apostrophe came out heavier than she meant. She left it. Nobody reads an apostrophe for correctness when the words say so much already, and she had learned that a sign only gets read twice if it is a little wrong.

Tobias collected it at dusk and paid in coppers, then stood in the lane holding it against the grey wall to see how it sat. His sister Maud came round the corner with a basket and stopped dead, reading the board, then reading him. Nell watched through the shop window as Maud set the basket down on the cobbles and pressed one hand flat over her mouth, and neither of them came in to explain.
