Two cat tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two matching cartoon cats are tattooed on the inner forearms, each drawn with simple black outlines and whiskers. The cats are filled with orange and yellow ink, with a lighter wash on the body and striped tails. The photograph is taken from above on a dark surface, with both hands held open and the cats sitting in the lower half of each forearm.

Dearest Ottilie,

You will not believe what the Duke's stationer sent up the hill this morning. Two cats, sold as a matched pair, one for the east gate and one for the west. The bill called them ginger tabbies with striped tails, which is true enough, though whoever painted them had clearly never watched a cat sit down. They sit like people who have been told to wait.
The trouble began on the Tuesday of the flood. Old Brannoch, who keeps the west gate, swore that his cat leaned towards the river every time the water rose a finger's width, and that the eastern one turned its whiskers to the Hollow Road whenever the Duke's riders were coming. Nobody believed him. Then the riders came down the Hollow Road in the rain, exactly as the eastern cat had been staring for an hour, and the bridge was already lifted before they reached the far bank.
I went up with a lantern to check the chains and found both cats sitting in the wet with their ears flat, as if they were the ones who had been frightened. Their stripes had run in the rain. I rubbed the orange from the nearer one with my sleeve and the wood underneath was warm.
I have not told the Duke. I have only chalked their names on the lintels, Left and Right, because nobody in this town would think to ask which was which.
Yours in haste, Matthias
