The lamp at Scarrow Point had gone dark twice that winter, and both times the fog had come in off the water like wet wool, so Ida Penhallow climbed the iron stairs with a sack of oil and no intention of coming down before morning. Her father had been carried home from the rocks with his ankle broken, and the boats were still out past the Nab, too far to hear the bell.

On the gallery rail, where the wind usually left nothing but salt, lay a black feather as long as her forearm. It was not a gull's. The quill was dark and the barbs were ruled as neatly as a clerk's columns, and when she held it to the sky the grey light ran along it like water. Her father used to say the sea keeps what it takes, but the sky lends its feathers to whoever is paying attention. She had never known whether he meant it kindly.
She turned the feather until its tip pointed at the one gap in the cloud, where five small stars showed like pinpricks in a sheet. She could not see the Plough through that gap, but she remembered where it sat in the winter, and she drew the line from the feather's point to the Nab with a stub of grease pencil on the glass. Then she trimmed the wick by hand, lit the spare lamp, and swung its beam along the line she had made.
The boats came in one at a time, following the rim of light that bent round the stars. Her brother was last, and he shouted up at her that he had never seen a light so badly aimed or so true. When the fog lifted at dawn the feather was still lying on the rail, and the stars had gone back to being only stars.
