Fine line wrist bands and finger dots
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The three photographs show the same wrist and hand from different angles against a plain pale background. The tattoos are thin, single-needle black lines, including three parallel bands encircling the wrist, an angular geometric line crossing the back of the wrist, and a small cluster of three dots on one finger. The compositions are tightly cropped and evenly lit, with the ink as the main focus.

The cable to the mainland had been dead since Tuesday, and by Friday Hollis Dunn had stopped pretending the gulls on the rail were not listening. He sat at the key in the signal hut with the lamp turned low, tapping the three short beats his father had taught him, the signal that meant the boats should stay in harbour. The sounder answered with nothing but its own tin hum.

Three strands of copper ran up the hillside from the hut to the mast, each strung on its own row of posts, and the storm had taken the middle one first. Hollis walked the line with a coil over his shoulder and pliers in his coat pocket. Every hundred yards he found a post leaning like a drunk and a length of wire lying in the heather, bright where it had been wrenched. He spliced each gap with the knot his mother used on fishing nets, and at every splice he tapped the key once to see if anything would come back.
At the top, the outer strand had snapped too. He stood on the ridge with the wind shoving him sideways and the sea grey to the horizon, and he was already working out how many fathoms of wire were left on the drum. Then the sounder clicked. Three short. Then a pause. Then three short again. Someone on the mainland was asking after him.
He tapped back the only answer he had, HERE, then walked down the hill with his hand on the wire, feeling the current hum through his palm all the way to the hut.
