Bookworm knuckle lettering
Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two clasped hands show the word BOOKWORM tattooed in black block lettering across the knuckles, one letter per finger. Small coloured icons sit on some fingers, and the ink is crisp with solid outlines and little shading. The tight crop centres the lettering, with a green sleeve and a metal ring visible around the frame.

The lift in Hallam House had been broken since March, so Dev carried the box of returns up eleven flights with one hand under it and the other sliding along the cold banister, reading the spines aloud as he climbed. Penguin, Penguin, a hardback with its jacket gone soft as cloth, a library stamp from a branch that closed before he was born. He liked the ones with the coloured stickers best. A red circle meant large print, a yellow square meant children's, and a blue dot meant somebody had once thought the book worth keeping.

Ruth on the fourth floor had the key to the community room on the ground floor, the one with the radiator that knocked like a fist. The mobile library had stopped coming in the spring, and the council had written to say the room would be let to a dance school unless somebody could show a use for it. So Dev had been reading the shelves properly, one book a night under the orange streetlamp, and making a ledger in the back of a school exercise book with every title he finished and a mark for each one he didn't.
He found the note on the fourteenth night, in a paperback about a lighthouse keeper. Someone had pencilled in the margin, very small: Keep going, the ending earns it. The initials were A.O. and the date was 1987. Dev read the last page twice to see if he agreed, and decided he did, and wrote the initials and the date in his ledger under a column headed Other People.
In the morning he took the box back down to the room and slid the lighthouse book onto the top shelf, spine out, where the next person would see it. Then he went up the eleven flights again, because the lift was still broken, and he left the door of the flat open so Ruth could hear him coming.
