Letter R finger band tattoo
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with a band tattoo around one finger. Two thin parallel black lines frame a bold serif capital R at the centre of the band. The ink is solid black with slight softening at the edges, and the composition is centred on the finger against a dark background.

Dear Ruth, the snow has shut the Coldharbour road since Tuesday, so the carrier hasn't come and I'm writing this on the back of the inn's tally sheets because the good paper went to pay the blacksmith. Mr Greaves is still in room four, complaining about the damp, and the two drovers from Penrith have taken to playing cards by the range for matchsticks, which is how I knew the weather had properly set in.

I found your father's old ring box in the cellar yesterday, the one with the brass hinge that sticks. Inside was the bit of wire he used to measure fingers for the wedding bands he never got round to making. I have been turning it over all evening. You always said he could have been a smith if he had not been so fond of the fiddle, and I think you were right, because the wire was bent into a perfect circle and the join was so neat you could hardly see it.
I have decided to take it to the Hollins girl in the village, the one who letters the shop signs. She says she can cut a capital R no bigger than a barley grain if you hold still. I told her the R is for you, and she looked at me the way Mrs Pargeter does when she thinks I am being sentimental. Perhaps I am. When the road opens I will bring it up myself, and you can tell me whether it still fits.
The snow is still coming down as I seal this. Through the window I can see the lamp at the top of the lane, the one you lit every night the winter you left, and I have lit it again. If the road stays shut I will write on Thursday, though I may have to use the flour bags for paper.
