Botanical flowers and blackberries on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A full leg is covered in a botanical design of purple irises, orange and pink flowers, blackberries and green leaves that flow down from the thigh. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft shading that gives the petals and foliage depth. Colour dominates the piece against the pale skin and cream bedding.

The customs men at Hollin Ford had long since stopped looking in Mara Oddy's basket. She carried hedge cuttings and wild iris roots in the same wicker they used for eggs, and nobody wanted to be the man who lifted a bramble and came away scratched. Her grandmother had walked the same path with the same excuse, and her grandmother's grandmother before that, back when the river was only a line on a map that the two villages could never agree on.

On the far bank lay Scarrow, where the gardens had been burned out during the years of the salt tax. Mara knew the old rule that a plant takes the name of the hand that first holds it. So each morning she pressed one bloom into the wet mud beside the stepping stones and said the name of someone on the other side who had asked her for something sweet. Purple iris for the widow at the mill. Orange poppy for the boy who swam the flood. Pink willowherb for the schoolmaster who could not pay his debts.
By the third winter the banks were no longer bare. Brambles had bridged the gap where the wall had fallen, their leaves thick as cloth and their fruit going black in the sun. The officers found the hedges too thorny to climb and too pretty to cut, and one by one they stopped arguing about which side the river belonged to.
Mara was old when the first child crossed without a pass. She sat on the bank with her basket empty and watched a girl pick one berry, eat it, and turn back, purple to the wrists. "Good," Mara said to nobody, and went home.
